Remembering the Great War

Chichester in the Great War is a project funded by Gateways to the First World War through the Arts and Humanities Research Council. This was a local volunteer project which was organised with the Chichester Community Development Trust and led by Dr Ross Wilson from the University of Chichester.

The project examined the ways in which Chichester was transformed by the experience of the First World War and turned into a place of mobilisation, a site for care, charity and recuperation and a space for remembrance.

Working with local charities, businesses and institutions, this project provided a ‘community history’ of the conflict for the city by demonstrating how the war reached all parts of residents’ lives and still persists through memorials today. The project was divided into three areas of research using material from the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester:

  • Mobilisation
  • Charity and Care
  • Commemoration

Each of our project volunteers worked with the Project Coordinator Dr Maureen Wright on these three areas and the team developed an exhibition and walking trail of Chichester which explored the history of the First World War in the city. Please contact Dr Ross Wilson if you would like more information on the project or you would like the travelling exhibition to be displayed at your school, community centre or venue.
